Chain Maille ... No Longer Just For Knights

Although there are no hard and fast rules, there are a couple of weaves that are considered a good place for new maillers to start.

Used to make the armour for knights of old this is a very popular weave that can have a varied look depending on the rings chosen.

AR or Aspect Ratio is used in chain maille to describe the ratio between the Inner Diameter (ID) of a ring and the Wire Diameter (WD) that the ring is made in.

Why is this important and why do I need to know all this? Understanding AR will help you calculate easily the ring sizes you need for each weave. In chain maille one ring size does not fit all, and if you have the ideal AR of a weave, or the ability to calculate it, then you are well on your way to finding that perfect ring

Like many other crafts, chain mailling sometimes feels like it has its own language that you need to learn. Here are a few terms explained that you will find helpful, especially when first starting out with chain maille.

Founded in 2008 our business was borne out of frustration.  Being a mailler myself I struggled with finding quality local supplies and the cost of constantly importing in small orders was proving to be prohibitive.

And so Aussie Maille was started.

What is Chain Maille?

Chain maille (also known as chainmail or simply maille) is typically armour or jewellery made by connecting metal  rings to one another.  Although traditionally the rings were made from metal, you can now use such materials as rubber and glass.  Beads and other findings can also be added to your maille to make it unique and entirely yours.
