Ring ID, AWG, SWG Aspect Ratio.....it's all giving me a headache....I'm a newbie where can I get some help?
At Aussie Maille we are very aware that we all had to start at the beginning, and it can sometimes be a scary and frustrating place to be. We have at Aussie Maille our fabulous Maille Library that we hope will answer all your questions...even the ones you didn't even realise you needed to ask! This is an ongoing project of ours, so we suggest you check back often.
What do your ring sizes mean, what are they based on?
Our rings are listed by inner diameter (ID) and are based on the mandrel size used to make that ring. Generally the actual ring ID will be slightly larger than the mandrel size because of the metals natural tendancy to spring back. This will generally not affect your weaves unless you are weaving something that has very specific size requirments.
Why are some of your rings odd sizes?
We currently have a mixture of metric and imperial measured rings. Generally a straight conversion from the imperial to metric is shown, making for the odd sounding sizes.
What is anodizing?
Anodizing is an electrolytic process. Basically the niobium is placed in a bath of conductive fluid and an electrical current is run through it to produce an oxide layer on the surface of the metal. It is this layer that produces the colour you can see. The various colours are the product of different voltages being used on that batch.
In relation to Aluminium, there is an additional step that involves dies to achieve the various colours.
How long will the colours last?
This will be subjective to serveral outside factors. The anodized colour can be scratched off, so reasonable care must be taken while weaving your rings. Try not to use a death grip on your pliers as you may scratch the rings. If you find you can't lessen your grip, try products like Tool Magic or even placing some masking tape over your pliers. The colours should last with normal wear of your items, but such factors as personal body chemistry may have an effect on the longevity of the colours. Once made into jewellery, keep the colour vibrant by not having them rub against such items as sand, keys etc.
How can I clean my anodized rings?
Niobium can be tumbled for a short period of time, but it is recommended to clean up your rings with warm soapy water. Do not use abrassive cloths to clean them.
